Yesterday was our 37th anniversary. We had plans to workout at the gym and then slip away to Boerne to eat lunch at the Boerne Vistro and then go to the river and feed the ducks. The Vistro (not Bistro, the ownerapos;s name is Vistro) will be doing the catering for GKapos;s wedding on the 25th of October. None of us have ever eaten their food, but they are close to the wedding/reception location, they had good recommendations and they were available at relatively short notice (thatapos;s another story for another day). At any rate that was our plan for the day.
Then the phone rang it was Gigi wondering if we could come to the hospital to sit with Kenny while she David attended an 11:30 AM meeting with all of the doctors. We said sure weapos;d be there and added that we could stay a bit longer so they could have a relaxed lunch together. Ever since the accident, they have been taking turns at the hospital so that Kenny is never alone. We were glad to spend time with Kenny, but we had an unexpected bonus. It just happened that Thumbelina, the worldapos;s smallest horse, was visiting the children at the hospital that afternoon. Kenny was so excited about the prospect of seeing her that he was telling his dad to hurry. David did the delicate transfer from bed to wheelchair, using the battery backup for the ventilator. Kennyapos;s big stuffed horse got to go along so that he could also meet Thumbelina. With the nurse carefully monitoring the ventilator numbers, we all went down the hall, down one floor in the elevator, and on to the room where doctors, nurses and families with the young patients, each with their own struggle, were gathered to see this special horse who is only 17 and a half inches tall. She was in a little fenced area with her owner who told us all about Thumbelina, answered questions, and then allowed the children to pet Thumbelina. David took Kennyapos;s hand and placed it on the little horse. At least for awhile, in a certain downtown childrenapos;s hospital, cares were lifted while everyone shared a special magical moment. It made for an unforgettable anniversary, much better than what we had originally planned.
