Books sometimes influence what I eat. Redwall books make you crave, well, everything. Before I read Invisible Man, I didnapos;t like sweet potatoes. But because of that one really delicious sounding scene, I now love them.

Something about Discworld books makes me crave eggs. More specifically, fried eggs. I donapos;t know why. But I didnapos;t really know what a fried egg was. At IHOP I would sometimes order a "fried egg over medium," which is basically an egg cracked and cooked till the white bit is solid but the yellow bit is still mostly runny.

But today, I made a fried egg. Bacon was on sale for $2, and eggs on sale for $1, so I could not resist.

Steve, I believe you have been wanting to try one, so I shall include the directions here.

1. In a smallish pan, cook three pieces of bacon until they are done. Make sure you donapos;t burn them, other wise everything will taste charred. Remove bacon, and put on a plate with a paper towel to absorb some of the grease.

2. You will have a ton of bacon grease. I poured some out, but I donapos;t know if this is necissary. It meant some grease dripped to the bottom of the pan, where I wiped it away with a washcloth, because I was afraid it would catch on fire. I did not pour all of it out, there was still quite a bit left, enough to be an actual liquid, not just a coating for the pan.

3. With the bacon grease still hot, and the stovetop still on, crack an egg into the pan.

4. It will sizzle. After a few seconds, flip it over with some metal tongs.

5. VERY IMPORTANT: Add some salt and pepper. Either now, or later. I didnapos;t add any till after I took a bite, which is when I realized how much it needed salt and paper. But I think it would be tasty if it were added in the cooking stage.

6. Let it sit for a while, sizzling. If you want, turn it over one more time for a few seconds.

7. Remove. Some parts of it will resemble a hash brown. Thus it is a fried egg.

Note: Do not pour bacon grease into the sink. This will gum it up.
